What are the Health Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

What are the health benefits of extra virgin olive oil? Regular intake of extra virgin olive oil has been associated with a variety of benefits that increase life expectancy and mitigate the signs of aging. Over the past decade, researchers from around the world have uncovered increasingly more evidence about the wide range of health benefits and why high-quality olive oil can extend human lifespan. In this blog, we will highlight five major health benefits of extra virgin olive oil as well as the best olive oil you can buy for your health. Lowers “Bad” Cholesterol Top quality olive oil is loaded with antioxidants that naturally lower the body’s “bad” cholesterol. Bodies need a healthy amount of cholesterol, but much of the fat-like substance is dangerous. High-quality extra virgin olive oil contains high density lipoproteins (HDL), a “good” cholesterol that helps remove too much of the body's low-density lipoproteins (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, from oxidizing in the body. Lowers Blood Pressure Several studies have shown olive oil lowers blood pressure because of its heart-healthy antioxidants called polyphenols. However, not all olive oils are the same. Real extra virgin olive oil is the least processed form of olive oil, which makes it more expensive, but it also contains the most nutrients to lower blood pressure and the highest levels of polyphenols. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to several health complications, such as a life-threatening aneurysm. Experts suggest consuming two to three tablespoons of the best quality olive oil daily to prevent high blood pressure. Helps Prevent Cancer Researchers discovered a chemical compound in olive oil called oleocanthal that kills human cancer cells without damaging non-cancerous cells. However, scientists will underscore quality matters more than quantity. Olive oil has various levels of oleocanthal concentration because of its origin, harvest time and...

How to Bake with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Curious about how to bake with extra virgin olive oil? You aren't the only one! Olive oil cakes are nothing new, but they’re becoming more and more popular for several reasons. Extra virgin olive oil is a wonderful alternative to butter and other cooking oils because of its nutritional benefits and unique flavor. It’s also a great way to keep your baked goods moist. In this blog, we explain when to use it, how to bake with it, and why you are going to love it. What’s the Best Kind of Olive Oil for Baking? Quality and flavor are critical when selecting an olive oil for baking. Extra virgin olive oil or EVOO is always going to be the best option because it comes from the first pressing, which means more health benefits and more flavor. For baking, we suggest using a mild extra virgin olive oil that’s buttery, fruity and not so bitter - like our Pasolivo Cucina Extra Virgin Olive Oil. If you are looking to add a dash of flavor to your baked items, you can also try a flavored oil. We love our Tangerine Olive Oil in brownies and our Lemon Olive Oil in chocolate cake. The important thing to remember is that you don’t want the flavor of the oil to overpower the rest of the dessert. More robust and peppery olive oils like our Tuscan Olive Oil or Classic Olive Oil are better for salads, steaks and potatoes, but not necessarily baked goods. Is Light Olive Oil Healthier? Using anything labeled "extra light olive oil" won’t reduce the number of calories, it just means less flavor and less nutritional value. That’s because extra light olive oil is a mix of highly processed olive oil and other cooking oils like vegetable, peanut, and canola. How...

Harvest 2017 Recap

Here at Pasolivo, harvest is one of the most exciting times of the year! This process only happens once a year and lasts anywhere from 2-3 weeks. If you have ever wondered how olives get turned into olive oil, we have all of the equipment and tools needed for this process at the Pasolivo Ranch. All of our olives are grown, picked, and milled on-site and we do not use any chemicals or heat which is required of true extra virgin olive oil. The first step in this process is picking the olives. Here at Pasolivo, we have over 6,500 olive trees on our property and 11 different olive varieties. Every day we have a minimum of 80 people hand-picking. Olives are moved by tractor to the mill where they are unloaded into the hopper. The olives are lined up and ready to be milled Bins of olives are transferred from the olive trees to the mill The hopper is a machine that helps to separate the leaves from the olives. This is the cleaning process where stems, leaves, twigs, and debri are removed. The olives go through the hopper and then are then washed with water to remove dirt and pesticides. A tractor moves a bin of olives to the hopper The olives are dumped into the hopper which will help rid the olives of debri, stems, and dirt The olives are cleaned and washed of stems and debri The olives are then given a "bath" before turning into paste The final cleanse before the olives get turned into oil The olives are ground into an oatmeal-like paste. This process was created to release the oil from the olives. The oil is first cold pressed so there is no heat that is added during this process and the olives...

Benefits of Extra Virgin Olive Oil for the Skin

Olive oil is commonly used in bath and body products as it is a natural moisturizer The health benefits of olive oil go far beyond how often we consume the product. In fact, it's common to have olive oil sitting in your medicine cabinet for anything besides drinking it. Olive oil has several uses, some of which you may not have known or heard of before. We have compiled some of the most common ways that olive oil can benefit your skin and prevent aging. According to Women's Health Magazine, olive oil can be used to eliminate wrinkles. Use extra virgin olive oil as a daily moisturizer, a pre-cleanser before your main cleanse, and as an anti-aging regimen. Since olive oil does not contain harsh chemicals, it doesn't damage the skin, and, in turn, contains moisturizing benefits. It is a safe and alternate way to provide yourself with a glow that is complete with a natural moisturizer. Extra virgin olive oil can also help reduce dandruff and keep your cuticles and nails healthy. Huffington Post also added that you can use olive oil for dry and irritated skin, sun burns, rashes, and bug bites. This is especially useful in the summer when the temperature can be in triple digits or in the dry, winter months. Whether you are camping, cooking, at the beach, or in the woods, olive oil can be a staple product. In the article by Marie Claire, "5 Reasons You Should Be Using Olives from Head to Toe" it said, "..if you're relegating olives as lettuce toppers and olive oil as one half of your vinaigrette, you're missing out on some of its most potent benefits—the ability to make your hair gleam, skin glow, and even freshen up your manicure." Olive oil in bath and body products...
